Sunday June 12th the APC Series took to the high banks of Sunset International Speedway for the second event of the 2016 season. The 100 lap event was won by Andrew Gresel (#81) after taking over the lead from Dale Shaw (#83) late.
In Bennett GM Pole Qualifying the entire field was within close quarters on the timing system but it would be defending series champion Dale Shaw (#83) setting fast time with a 14.263 and setting a new series track record after knocking Nick Goetz (#24) off the top spot late. Goetz set a new track record earlier in qualifying breaking his own time set last season. The top 5 in qualifying were Shaw, Goetz, Matt Pritiko (#21), Jamie Cox (#22), and defending race winner Andrew Gresel (#81). Four drivers qualified under the old track record and the top 8 cars were within one tenth of each other.
Dale Shaw would draw the pole in the pill draw meaning he would lead the field to the green with Nick Goetz starting in 2nd. Shaw elected to start the race on the high side for the race. On the initial start the #24 of Nick Goetz did not get going causing the field to stack up. Billy Schwartzenburg (#86) climbed over the left rear of Andrew Gresel and made contact with the inside wall. Jaxson Jacobs (#97) also received significant front damage in the stackup. The race would go green for a lap before caution number 2 came out for a spin in turn one collecting Andrew Gresel and Shawn Chenoweth (#89c) along with several cars coming to a stop to miss the wreck. Three laps into the race Matt Pritiko (#21) took the lead from Shaw with an inside pass and would hold the spot until lap 25 when Shaw regained the position and began to checkout on the field. The race would go into a long green flag run until lap 45 when the caution flag would fly for contact between 3rd place runner Matt Pritiko and Willie Reyns (#87) who was going a lap down. Many drivers made use of this caution to come down pit road for adjustments including Powell, Mat Box and Shawn Chenoweth.
On the lap 45 restart Dale Shaw would hold off Jamie Cox for the lead and begin to open up his lead once again while other drivers charged through the field. Andrew Gresel began cutting through traffic and regaining lost positions from the early race incident, moving into the top 5 before the three-quarter mark. Shawn McGlynn (#23) also made several passes in the second half of the race to move into the top 5. After lap 75 it became clear that Shaw’s lead was shrinking as Gresel began knocking off impressive lap times. On lap 89 of the 100 lap race Shaw slid up the track in turn 3 allowing Gresel to get underneath and move past for the top spot. Shaw would attempt to regain the spot but would come up short as the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Ford Fusion of Andrew Gresel would make it back-to-back wins. Shaw would finish 2nd, and Shawn McGlynn earned his first career APC Series podium finish. Dwayne Baker (#48) finished in the 4th position with Rick Burbridge (#2) rounding out the top 5.
The teams will have a much earned week off next weekend to prepare for the next event, which is at Sauble Speedway in two weeks time on June 25th. Full itinerary and event details can be found online at www.APCRacingSeries.com.
